Taxi drivers in the Welsh capital of Cardiff have recently come under fire from the council for turning the central train station into a “chaotic embarrassment”.

In recent months every day drivers have had to put up with annoying queues as a result of the taxi drivers overspill out of the train station.

The road is extremely narrow and despite it being marked with double yellow lines, the cabbies still park there forcing anyone wishing to get down the road to queue up like them.

As one might imagine, this does not create a very good impression of the welsh capital. People looking to catch a train will have to navigate these crowded streets and may even, because of the congestion, miss their departure. All in all it’s an embarrassing affair for Cardiff.

However, steps are being taken to regulate the flow of taxi traffic into the station with an on the spot fine of £70 being issued to anyone parked on the double yellow lines. The authority is changing the law so that civil enforcement officers can issue the fines on the spot.

Obviously however, there are two sides to the story. A taxis union has said that it is a problem that has been created by the council: there is only space for 6 taxis in the station and previously it was not an issue as the taxi’s used to park up on the pavement outside. Now the council have erected barriers to stop them doing this and short of going around and around the inner city causing more congestion to the roads there is nowhere else they can really go.

Mr Khan of the Cardiff Hackney Carriage Association suggested that the council have a moral obligation to provide us with a workplace that is safe and allows us to earn money and he believes that they are depriving him and his fellow taxi drivers this.
