Transit Van Insurance

History of the Transit Van

The transit van, used the world over in many different capacities, comes in the form of the standard panel van, minibus and pickup truck.

The Transit vans heritage, as we know it dates back to October1965 when the first one rolled off the factory conveyor belt in Langley, UK.  This version was mass-produced for the European market but what is often forgotten is that the first real ford transit was built over in Cologne, Germany, in 1953. It was known as the FK 1000 and the name Ford Taurus Transit was given to the vehicle in 1961. Thus retrospectively the FK 1000 can be known as simply a 2transit".

The FK 1000s payload of 1000kg was a lot of weight in those days and because of this, the foundations of the success of the Transit had been set in stone.

The UK version, which started in 1965, was supplied with a 1.7litre petrol engine with 73bhp, a 2.0litre petrol engine with 85bhp or an unpopular 43bhp diesel engine, which was sourced from Perkins.

Today, the van has all the mod cons and comfort of a family saloon but with the durability known on the building site AND on the road, which you can rely on.

  • Excess Amount - Depending on what optional excess you choose, this will affect your premium. Basically, the higher the amount of money you are willing to contribute to a claim, the lower your premium is likely to be. Simple trade really.
  • No Claims Bonus - this more years No Claims Bonus (NCB), the better your track record and so you will typically be rewarded with a lower transit van insurance premium than someone with zero NCB / claims.
  • Size Matters - A long wheel base (LWB) transit will typically be more expensive to insure than a short wheel base (SWB), simply for the fact that a larger van has the capacity to carry more and hence do more damage in a collision that a lighter van.
  • Usage - using the van for social, domestic and pleasure is not the same as driving it up and down the country as a courier so what the vans purpose is will affect the premium.
  • Mileage - leading nicely on from the purpose of the van, the mileage that you are likely to cover in the vehicle in a given period will affect the premium amount.
  • Security - do you have a tracker / immobilizer? How secure is your transit? Having these fitted to your vehicle is a definite positive.
  • Location - the address that the van is insured at can affect the premium. Some areas are more "risky" than others.
