Claims data collected be Acorn Insurance* reveals an alarming rise in vehicle fire-related claims across the UK, with some regions seeing significant spikes.

Birmingham Tops the List for Vehicle Fire Claims

Research based on claims data from Acorn Insurance highlights Birmingham as the city with the highest number of vehicle fire claims, registering 40 incidents. Following closely behind, Manchester saw 21 vehicle fire-related claims.

The North West Leads in Regional Claims

The North West has been identified as the region with the highest number of vehicle fire claims, recording a total of 106 incidents. The West Midlands was also notably affected, with 100 claims across the area.

The Rising Threat of Vehicle Fires

The findings, based on a detailed analysis of recent claims data from Acorn Insurance, underscore the growing danger of vehicle fires across the country. Insurance experts urge drivers to remain vigilant, particularly in high-risk areas, and to take preventative measures to reduce the likelihood of such incidents.

Vehicle fires can occur for a variety of reasons. These include mechanical or electrical faults — such as overheating engines, faulty wiring, or fuel system leaks — as well as external factors like vandalism or arson. It is worth noting that a vehicle fire can sometimes come from less obvious sources: unattended rubbish, environmental detritus (fallen leaves or the like), or other flammable materials inside or around the vehicle can also become potential sources of ignition.

Drivers are advised to carry out regular maintenance checks, including inspecting wiring, monitoring fluid levels, and ensuring their vehicle is regularly serviced. The handbook that comes with your vehicle will provide guidance as to how and when to carry out the appropriate maintenance. It’s also important to avoid overloading the vehicle’s electrical system with, for example, aftermarket safety devices, as well as making sure that the vehicle is parked in a secure area where possible. Any unusual smells, smoke, or dashboard warnings should be taken seriously and addressed immediately by a professional mechanic.

“This data highlights a concerning trend that vehicle owners across the UK should take note of,” said Joseph O’Connell, Claims Director at Acorn Insurance. “While the reasons behind vehicle fires can vary — from mechanical faults to deliberate acts — it’s vital that drivers carry out regular maintenance checks and remain alert, especially in regions where these occurrences are rising. At Acorn, we’re committed to helping customers stay protected and informed.”
